The topic is WEAPONS (OR MILITARY)
TECHNOLOGY, THE ENGINEER AND QUESTIONS OF JUSTICE:   This
option is based on chapter 10 of the Martin text, and electronic reserve article
assigned for the last week of class, “Applying the Rules of Just War Theory”,
along with the articles on the use of generative AI in the military, especially
for use in autonomous weapons(linked below).  Type an
approximately 4 page double-spaced essay on the following set of questions:
THE ENGINEER
AND THE MILITARY, AND GLOBAL CONCERNS:
On the one hand, can we separate any beneficial effects from any harmful
effects of a type of technology, such as drones or flying robotics, or, in the
future, the possibility of autonomous (that is, no human operator) drones?  Does this depend upon their specific use, in
the case of autonomous weapons and robots or AI?   On the other hand, can we simply treat
technology as “neutral” without any implications for their use and our
lives?   Who are the stakeholders in this
type of technology?   For this option you
must discuss, in some detail, the article on “Applying Just War Theory” as
regards to its argument (and not just its position); and discuss whether or not
this argument is applicable  to the
technology of generative AI and autonomous weapons and why or why not; and
discuss whether or not the example of generative AI and autonomous weapons
calls into question the entire argument given in this article, and how or how
not.
You may also draw upon any outside material on drone technology, as
especially used in the military, but be sure to include citations for any
sources.
