In this assignment, you will write an opinion paper. This is a paper designed to gauge how much you know about corrections. Please respond to each of the following questions in your paper:
1. What do you think the population of U.S.
Corrections looks like? In other words, how many people do you think are incarcerated and their demographics.
2. There are several philosophies of punishment (retribution, deterrence, incapacitation, rehabilitation, and restoration)? Which do you think works the best? Why?
3. What do you know about risk assessments in the U.S. Criminal Justice System?
4. Can we “fix” offenders? If so, how? If not, why?
5. What should we do with people returning to the community after they have been incarcerated?
Time remaining: 5 hours 29 minutes
The assignment can be as short or as long as it takes to answer these questions but do put some thought into this.
You should not use any sources or Google these topics. The purpose is to gain and understanding about your experience is on these topics off the top of your head. There is no reference page needed for this assignment.
While citations are not required, the other principles about writing papers still apply. Make sure your paper has an intro, body, and conclusion. You may use the first person in this paper. Make sure you use a formal tone in your response. It shouldn’t read like a conversation. The only difference in this paper and any other paper in class is that what you state is not empirically supported.
