The purpose of the policy event assignment is to increase knowledge of current policy issues,
encourage involvement with advocates, and increase awareness of the policy arena. To be effective
as an advocate, a social worker must be informed and engage with others advocating for social
policy issues.
The event must include a discussion of a specific policy proposal by decision- makers, stakeholders,
interest groups, or constituents. Examples of events include town halls of a federal, state, or local
legislator; school board meeting; city council meetings; an advocacy group meeting; or a policy
education event.
To complete this assignment, attend the policy event, engage with someone at the event, and
complete a written summary of your experience. You will also discuss your experience during the
Week 10 live session.
Submit your 750- to 1,000-word narrative summary as a Word document, 12- point font and double-
spaced, to the Online Campus. The narrative summary should be in paragraph format and address
each of the questions below for full credit.

Issue or Policy Description
• What issue is the policy event addressing?
• What information was provided at the event?
• What alternative, counterargument/perspective was presented, if any? What are your
impressions of the event?
Engagement Description

• How did the person you engaged with learn about the organization holding the event?
• What has the person you engaged with done in the past to advocate for this issue?
