Overview
For this unit, you will write a paper analyzing “This is America” by childish gambino music video. In your paper, briefly summarize or describe the music video, identifying its message, and then analyze its rhetorical situation. (Rhetorical situation: “The context in which writing or other communication takes place, including purpose, audience, genre, stance, and media/design,” p. G/I-45). Discuss the specific strategies (for instance, lyrics, technology, details, etc.) that are used to convey the artist’s message and comment on the social, political, and/or cultural context of the video. Your paper should contain a clear and interesting thesis supported by specific, concrete details; provide sufficient description of and insightful comments about the video being analyzed; and integrate text and visuals effectively.
Two chapters will help you directly with this assignment: Chapter 11 Analyzing Texts and Chapter 3 Summarizing and Responding. Each explores aspects of how to analyze concepts and offers sample writings as well as visuals of the parts of an analysis paper. In addition, Chapter 61 Textual Analyses provides several examples of textual analysis essays.
Requirements
750-1,000 words, plus a Works Cited page
Incorporate at least one image from the music video to illustrate your analysis. Consider including a few screenshots from the music video, accompanied by descriptive captions. The image(s) in your paper should be integrated in a visually pleasing way and should enhance your readers’ understanding of your analysis.
Modern Language Association (MLA) style must be used in the paper.
Outside research is not required for this assignment, but you should document any material from other sources in an in-text citation and on your Works Cited page (see Chapter 53 MLA Style). Use 43. Online video (p. 602) to create a Works Cited entry for the video.
