In the readings over the first few weeks of the course, we studied organized crime in Brazil, Mexico and Central America. Though the gangs/cartels were in different countries and different cultures, there were clear similarities. Why do you think that organized crime has such a strong presence in many cities in Latin America? State at least three reasons and make sure to back them up from examples from the readings/films or other research.

Imagine that the United States legalized drugs next week…all of them. What impact do you think that this policy decision would have on the following:

In the book Dream Land, the author is following the story of why opiates have become such a social problem in the United States.
