MG414 Organisational Behaviour CW1: Group Report

Module Code: MG414

Module Title: Organisational Behaviour

CW1: Group Report

Background

Practitioners of Organisational Behaviour & Management (OBM) focus on identifying problematic situations in the workplace, analysing the factors in the environment that could be causing or maintaining the performance problems (e.g. lack of: task clarity, goal-setting, resources), then changing behaviours by using ‘re-enforcers’ (such as feedback, praise, monetary and non- monetary incentives), with the goal of improving performance at the individual, group, or organisational, systems/process level.

Task

In a group of no more than 4 people, you are to select a local restaurant (must not be part of a chain with more than 250 employees) to write a 2,500-word report (+/- 10%) which investigates the complexities of managing performance and motivation; at individual, group and organisational levels. How do managers motivate their colleagues to work better, as part of a team or to go above and beyond the basic requirements of their job descriptions. You may wish to consider such areas as reward, development, organisational culture and management style, amongst others. Also, remember that context and organisational culture are crucial – what works in one type or size of business may not necessarily work in another.

This must be supported by appropriate literature, academically credible sources, theory and research relevant to the chosen organisation. Models can be used not only to explain how people behave and interact at work but may also be used to predict how people may react if things change. So when you are looking at making recommendations, look at whatever models you are
using and consider what actions could be useful to support change.

You are not required to carry out any primary research but should confine yourself to secondary sources only.

The Report

Each member’s work allocation, contribution, and attendance of any meetings must be formally logged in the appendices and signed by all parties.

The main expectations are identified in concept below and should be discussed with the tutor throughout the module as you work collectively on your assignment. You will be expected to present your work to date as a formative assessment in week 10, and this will provide you with some constructive feedback to allow you to continue your group work and complete the written report.

The report will contain the following parts:

1. Title Page
2. Executive Summary
3. Table of Contents
4. Introduction
5. The organisation (max 200 words)
6. Managing performance
7. Motivation
8. Conclusion
9. Recommendations
10. Reference List
11. Appendices (including a work log)

Your conclusions and recommendation must be relevant to your chosen organisation.
