The research paper shall be in Modern Language Association (MLA) format, and 5-7 pages in length (exclusive of Endnotes, Works Cited, Appendices, etc.). The research paper will be submitted via Canvas and evaluated through Turnitin for originality. The research paper is due by Sunday, July 28, 2024 at 11:59 Central Time. The research paper will include the following sections:

Introduction (this section describes the event; avoid making this too long)

  • Describe the event (time, location, hazard(s), notable vulnerabilities, special circumstances, damage sustained, etc.)
  • Discuss the people (decision makers) and organizations involved in this particular event
  • Identify 3 of the most prominent failures or weaknesses in the preparedness, mitigation, response, and/or recovery phases surrounding this event

Analysis (this is the main part of the paper, and therefore, should be the longest)

  • Analyze the 3 failures or weaknesses
    • What were the conditions and circumstances that contributed to each of the failures or weaknesses? (e.g. organizational structures; relationships; decisions; communication; geography)
    • Could similar failures or weaknesses occur today?

Recommendations (this is where you can apply your knowledge of the course material most clearly)

  • Identify at least one action (recommendation) that can be taken to prevent each of the identified failures or weaknesses in the future
  • Identify if any of your recommendations were actually acted upon by the appropriate authorities. If so, how effective was the implementation?

    Papers must be typed on a computer and printed on standard white paper 8.5 inches by 11 inches, portrait.

    1. The text of the paper must be double-spaced using Times New Roman, 12 points only.
    2. Leave only one space after periods and other punctuation marks.
    3. The margins of the document must be one inch on all sides. Paragraphs are to be indented one-half inch from the left margin (five spaces or press “Tab” once).
    4. All pages are to be numbered consecutively in the upper right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top, and flush with the right margin.
    5. Use either italics or underlining consistently throughout the document for the titles of longer works and, only when necessary, to provide emphasis.
    6. Endnotes are to be on a separate page before the Works Cited page
