Part 1 Research:
Think about the following –
The global commodity chains that bring food from many countries to grocery stores in the United States give wealthy consumers a great variety of food choices, but the farmers at the beginning of the commodity chain earn very little money.
What kinds of global commodity chains are YOU participating in right now? Pick something you’ve used today (your clothes/shoes, electronics, even good food). Starting with where YOU got it, travel backwards, researching how it got to you, where it was made/grown/manufactured).
Drop any links you used while researching.
Part 2 Reflection:
Watch (or rewatch) this week’s two ted talks. Reflect on what you heard. Pick ONE of the talks to critique! Pick ONE to support!
Note: you can critique something, even if you mostly agree with it! So too, you can support something, even if you think it has flaws.
Want to help someone? Shut up and listen!
When most well-intentioned aid workers hear of a problem they think they can fix, they go to work. This, Ernesto Sirolli suggests, is naïve. In this funny and impassioned talk, he proposes that the first step is to listen to the people you’re trying to help, and tap into their own entrepreneurial spirit. His advice on what works will help any entrepreneur.

Poverty isn’t a lack of character; it’s a lack of cash
“Ideas can and do change the world,” says historian Rutger Bregman, sharing his case for a provocative one: guaranteed basic income. Learn more about the idea’s 500-year history and a forgotten modern experiment where it actually worked — and imagine how much energy and talent we would unleash if we got rid of poverty once and for all.
