    Goal:

The goal of the Week 3 Assignment is to select a research topic and brainstorm your approach to it.

    Description:

In COMM120, the Weeks 3 and 5 Assignments all work towards and contribute to the Week 7 Final Project. The Week 3 Assignment: Topic and Brainstorming has you choose a topic that you will use for the rest of the class. For many, this topic relates to the degree or career they are pursuing, while for others, it may simply reflect a personal interest—such as a hobby, activity, or a non-controversial aspect of history.

    Step 1: Prompt for CoPilot

Please copy and paste the following prompt into CoPilot. When you do this, you will need to edit the prompt and add your own topic. Here are some examples of possible topics:

    • …getting a sociology degree and future career prospects.
    • …getting a cybersecurity degree and future career prospects.
    • …becoming a park ranger.

You can go directly to CoPilot [weblink] or to Office365 login [weblink].

    Prompt:

Task: Create a brainstorming report about <enter topic here>

    Context:

    • 100-level college course on information literacy
    • This assignment is the first of three assignments that relate to each other. Week 3 Assignment: Topic and Brainstorming, Week 5 Assignment: Sources Evaluation, and Week 7 Assignment: Final Project

    Tone: Academic

    Output:

    • Topic: include topic of the project.
    • Scope: include the research scope of the project and the value it might bring to a person’s personal and professional life.
    • Value: include how the topic will bring value to a person’s personal and professional life.
    • Communication medium: what possible presentation software might be used such as PowerPoint or Prezi.
    • Brainstorming: include any additional brainstorming ideas that will create a well thought out project plan.

    Thank you!

Step 2: Fill out Topic and Brainstorming Worksheet

Once you get your output from CoPilot, fill out the Week 3 Worksheet. You will need to fill out the following:

    • Part I: Topic and Brainstorming
      • Take the CoPilot output and copy and paste it into the Worksheet.
      • You will paste this into the Template as-is (you will not change anything).
    • Part II: Critical Thinking Questions
      • Add critical thinking questions that will allow for greater investigation into the topic.
      • These questions need to be your own and you cannot use CoPilot or any other Gen AI tool to do this for you.
    • Part III: Reflection
      • Write two paragraphs where you reflect on your chosen topic and how you will use the information from CoPilot in your future assignments.
      • This reflection needs to be your own and you cannot use CoPilot or any other Gen AI tool to do this for you.
    • Part IV: Reference Page
      • Post the Reference for CoPilot.
  • You have encountered various theories of knowledge and theories of being in this course, beginning with Plato/Socrates (as well as pre- Socratics like Parmenides), Descartes and the rationalists, empiricism, and Kantian constructivi

    Assignment
    Directions:

    Goal:  A deeper
    understanding of the chosen topic.

While some Assignments can be a bit
more creative, learning how to improve your skills with written communication
is also a good thing. Toward that end, the goal here is to write a paper of
between 500-750 words on one of the three options below:

    • Use one or more moral
theories from weeks 6 and 7 to justify what you believe is the right
thing to do concerning some contemporary situation.
      • Define
and describe the theories you use.
      • Describe
the contemporary moral situation and why it is a moral situation.
      • Describe
how the theory provides the reasoning/justification to demonstrate your
proposed solution is the best one.
    • You have encountered
various theories of knowledge and theories of being in this course,
beginning with Plato/Socrates (as well as pre-Socratics like
Parmenides), Descartes and the rationalists, empiricism, and Kantian constructivism.
The phenomenological method, as described in Week 7, can also give us
tools for a theory of knowledge. Use one or more theories from
epistemology and/or metaphysics to discuss what kinds of things you can
know and how you can claim to know what you know.
      • Define
and describe the theory or theories that you use to make your claim.
      • Say
something about the range of possible knowledge that you can
legitimately claim as knowledge. That is, does it include only
knowledge of what can be sensed and whatever is physical? Or can we
know abstract objects like universals? Can we have knowledge of more
spiritual or esoteric realities, like the soul, God, religious
        doctrines, etc.?
      • Explain
the reasons that support your viewpoint by providing arguments that are
in dialogue with relevant thinkers discussed in our course.
    • Use one or more theories
from weeks 3-5 and 8 to demonstrate humans have a purpose.
      • Define
and describe the theory or theories you use to make your claim.
      • Keep in
mind that the goal is to argue humans have a purpose. If you do not
think we have one, consider another option.
      • Be sure
your argument includes like-minded philosophers on the type of purpose
        you claim humans have.

    Submission
    Instructions:

    • Your paper will be
written at a college level with an introduction
      (one that
states an argumentative/interpretive thesis and that indicates what
would be covered and in what order)
, body paragraphs, a conclusion, along with
in-text citations/Works Cited page in MLA, Turabian, Chicago, or APA formatting.
    • Remember—any resource
that is listed on the Works Cited page must have an in-text citation in
the paper to match, or this is considered plagiarism. [Note: MLA style
is preferred, but depending on your degree area, you may be more
familiar with APA or one of the other styles. You can use any approved
      style; just be consistent.]
    • All papers must be
double-spaced with one-inch margins on all four (4) sides
      .
    • Using one of the
templates below is strongly encouraged. Please note that 25 points are
directly tied to "digital literacy" and "works
      cited" – see the rubric.
    • You may only submit files
compatible with the Turnitin system.  Please use MS Word.

    Integrated Learning Project Assignment Instructions

    Overview

The integrated learning assignment is a series of 6 assignments and a final course consolidated submission. All assignments and the compilation of the final consolidated submission is managed as an individual assignment.

    Purpose

The purpose of the ILP is for everyone to develop a working model of an ERP system applied to a firm of their choosing. This model will be built up in modular format through weekly assignments culminating in the submission of the completed model in the final week of the course together with a management proposal detailing the costs and benefits as they apply to the income statement and balance sheet of the selected firm.

    Resources

The development of the assignments will be supported not only by written instructions but also with an explanatory Watch item.

    Expectations

    • Each component, from Module 3: Week 3 will be the development of an ERP module in Excel relevant to the topic for that week. The Excel development will follow SAP and other ERP systems formats. The Excel file will be accompanied by a written assignment containing:
      1. Details on how this ERP assignment could be implemented (assignment management process, who should be involved, and why, etc.) within the chosen firm (min 300 words)
      2. Details on how ERP could be operated (management process, who should be responsible, numbers of different users of each module, data accuracy, etc.) within the chosen firm (min 300 words)
      3. What could be the future sources of inaccuracy in the data contained the ERP system (min 300 words)
      4. How the corruption of the data could be prevented (min 300 words)
      5. An analysis and composition of the net benefit (benefits minus costs linked to income statement and balance sheet) of the implemented ERP system
    • The final integrated Excel ERP working model for your chosen firm, due at the end of week 8, will tie all the preceding modules together into a fully integrated working ERP model in Excel. The integrated modules will include, Master Production Schedule, Bill of Materials, Materials Requirements Planning, Capacity Planning, Distribution Requirements Planning and Shop Floor Control. The Excel file will be submitted simultaneous with the following written report. The final course report would be about 3,000 words (excluding references and appendices), much of which would have been accumulated over the preceding 6 weeks.

                                                                                                     RUBRICS

Critical Thinking:  Remarks are substantive and content rich with evidence of analysis, synthesis and evaluation of information or responses of peers.

Development of Ideas: Remarks are well developed with introduction of new ideas with specific details from readings/ experience/ evidence to support ideas.

                                                                                             Ideas to organize your debate:

    • 1. IntroductionOutline your case with an introduction that states your main arguments and explains the general thrust of your case.  This must be done briefly since the most important thing is to get on and actually argue it.
    • 2. Case
      • Having outlined the main argument, then begin to build a case (the parts).  Divide your case into a few arguments (parts) and justify your arguments with basic logic, worked examples, statistics, and quotes.  Debating is all about the strategy of “proof”. Proof, or evidence, supports your assertion and develops an argument. It is usually best to put the most important arguments first.
        • Here is an example of a case outline:   “The media exert more influence over what people think than the government does.  This is true for three reasons.  Firstly, most people base their votes on what they see and hear in the media. Secondly, the media can set the political agenda between elections by deciding what issues to report and in how much detail.  Thirdly, the media have successfully demonized politicians over the last ten years so that now people are more likely to believe journalists than politicians.”
          • All of the arguments in this case outline are debatable (almost immediately you can see the counterarguments), but they give the case a wide range which covers all kinds of issues.  The trick is not to come up with a watertight case, but a well-argued one.  Think: “Can I argue that?”
    • 3. Rebuttal of the Parts
      • Arguments can be factually, morally or logically flawed. These are the basics of rebuttal and almost every argument can be found wanting in at least one of these components.  Here are a few examples:
      • “Banning cigarette product placement in films will cause more young people to smoke because it will make smoking more mysterious and tabooer.”  This is logically flawed; the ban would be more likely to stop the steady stream of images which make smoking seem attractive and glamorous and actually reduce the number of young people smoking.
    •
      • Ask yourself how the other side approached the case. Is their methodology flawed?
      • Consider what tasks the other side set themselves (if any) and whether they have in fact addressed these.
      • Consider what the general emphasis of the case is and what assumptions it makes. Try to refute these.
      • Take the main arguments and do the same thing.  It is not worth repeating a point of rebuttal that has been used by someone else already, but you can refer to it to show that the argument has not stood up.  It is not necessary to correct every example used.  You won’t have time and your aim is to show the other side’s case to be flawed in the key areas.
