5N1786 Special Needs Assisting: Research Additional Needs Project (50%), QQI Level 5

The 5N1786 project (50%, 2,000 to 2,500 words) asks you to research one diagnosed special educational need and connect it to the SNA role in Irish schools. You outline the role, qualities and skills of the Special Needs Assistant, summarise at least three laws, regulations or guidelines that protect children with special educational needs, research your chosen condition in depth and reflect on what you learned about inclusion.

Assessment Activity Guidelines

You are required to research a diagnosed special educational need. In particular, the learner will be required to:

• Outline the roles, responsibilities, qualities and skills of the Special Needs Assistant.
• Create a presentation in order to summarise a minimum of three pieces of current relevant legislation, regulations or guidelines that support the rights of the child.
• Research a diagnosed special educational need, outlining the prevalence, contributing causes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis, and the supports available to the child and their family.
• Clearly reflect on your own personal learning and development with regard to inclusion, and describe any challenges you faced.

The learner will be required to include appropriate references and a reference list.

Format and Word Count

• Word count: 2,000 to 2,500 words.
• The project may be presented by a variety of means, for example video, presentation, poster, podcast or essay. The format must be agreed with the assessor.
• As a guide, a word count of 1,000 words is the equivalent of an oral presentation or podcast of 7 to 8 minutes.
