Partnering with Parents and Families to Support Positive Student Behavior
Students will explore strategies for effective communication and collaboration with families when addressing challenging student behaviors.

Read the scenario below and create a communication plan. You may do this in one of two ways:

Paper (use the family communication plan template):

In the plan, discuss three ways you can involve Jordan’s family in supporting the intervention at home or reinforcing positive behaviors (minimum 2 –3 paragraphs).

Additionally, discuss steps you would take to address their concerns while maintaining the student’s best interest (minimum 2 – 3 paragraphs).

Lastly, draft a short email or phone script that you would use to initiate communication with the family about the behavior plan.

Answer the reflection questions in your concluding paragraph(s): Why is family collaboration critical in addressing challenging behaviors? How can strong school-family partnerships improve student outcomes?

Presentation/Canva/Prezi…

1 slide per strategy in how you can involve Jordan’s family in supporting the intervention at home or reinforcing positive behaviors.
1 slide per step you would take to address their concerns while maintaining student’s best interest (minimum 2 steps).

You must upload a separate word document with the reflection questions; minimum 1 paragraph per question (see above).

SCENARIO:

You are a special education teacher working with Jordan, a 4th-grade student who frequently refuses to complete assignments and sometimes leaves the classroom without permission. The behavior occurs most often during math and writing tasks. After collecting baseline data, you plan to implement an intervention that includes a check-in/check-out system and positive reinforcement for task completion.

Jordan’s parents have expressed frustration, saying:

“We don’t see these behaviors at home. We don’t understand why this is happening at school.”
