Exploring Implicit Bias: My Experience with the Harvard Implicit Bias Test

I nstructions:
This writing assignment is an attempt to understand bias—both explicit and implicit. None of
us want to admit to any bias, but we all maintain some measure of bias, even when we do not
consciously believe that we do so. Students will take the Implicit Bias test from Harvard
University and then write 3-5 pages about their test experiences, observations, and results, and
reflect on those implicit or subconscious biases. The paper is DUE May 11 at midnight.
Take the following implicit bias test and use the experience and results to complete your paper.
********You need to choose a time when you can devote at least 15 minutes of uninterrupted
time to take the test BY YOURSELF********
1. Copy and paste the link below into your web browser:
https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html
2. Read the “Preliminary Information” page and click on “I wish to proceed” at the bottom.
3. Choose from any of the tests listed there. The test that you use to write your paper should
be from at least one of the following topic areas: race, gender, disability, sexual
orientation. You may choose to take as many tests as you like, but you need to write
your paper about ONE test at the least and THREE at the most. NOTE: if you have
already taken this test before, choose one from the list that you have not taken before.
4. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO SUBMIT THE RESULTS OF YOUR TEST WITH
YOUR WRITING ASSIGNMENT, but you do need to discuss some of your responses
and the results with the below requirements:
a) Which test(s) did you choose and why?
b) What do you think is the purpose of an implicit bias test like this? What might it
be useful for? If you think it is not useful, explain why.
c) What did you observe about the test? (What were some questions, what was the
experience like?)
d) If you are comfortable providing the results, please reflect on your results.
• Do you agree or disagree with the results? Why or why not? what did they
indicate about your bias?
• Do you expect this bias would affect you and your ability to do your job in
the future? If so, how? If not, why not?
