This paper will require that you watch a show (play, musical, etc.), film, or TV show (of your choice) or find a story or current event from a reliable media source that deals with any of the ethical issues or theories that we’ll be covering in class. The intention of the project is to see if you can see and explain some of the philosophical theories we’ll be discussion when they appear in the “real world” (i.e. “in action”). You must give a synopsis of the film or show or event, an explanation of the relevant parts of the film or show or event, an exegesis of two authors (who we’ve covered in class) whose arguments are relevant, an application of those theories to the ethical issue in your show, and finally a commentary on your perspective of the philosophical issues involved. The final paper should be between 12 pages (not including title page (which is optional), works cited (which is required), and bibliography (which is recommended, but not required), either 10-12 font with 1-1.25 inch margins. Preferred style is MLA; however, feel free to use whatever style guide you’re comfortable with. The thesis statement for this paper, which must be in the introductory paragraph of the final paper, must contain a single statement on the appropriateness of viewing your show (and/or your show’s ethical issue) through the lens of one of the philosophers you’re choosing to work with. You should have at least two quotes that you spend time examining, analyzing, and unpacking. You should not have more than 8 quotes. Your paper should have the following sections: An introduction where you introduce the show, the authors, and that sets up your thesis statement. A section (of at least two paragraphs, but easily more) that explains your show and its relevant ethical issue(s). A section of exegesis for two philosophers. This should be at least 6 and likely more like 10 paragraphs. A section where you apply the philosophical theories to the issues in the show. There are several ways to treat this. You could have it separate from the exegeses or you could have it woven within. This MUST contain an argument, related to your thesis, that argues for your claim that one of the philosophers theories offers a [useful/applicable/choice-guiding] explanation of the ethical issue in the show. A section where you present your own view on the ethical issues of the show. This could be you agreeing with one of the philosophers you’ve chosen, or eschewing them altogether. A conclusion that demonstrates how you successfully argued for your thesis. pick from Kant, Aristotle, Noddings, Mills, Hume, Noddings, Benedict, Midgley, Thomas, Nocross, Ossareh, Johnson.
