Assignment Task

Brief

Your employment as an assistant quantity surveyor in an international quantity surveying practice has commenced. You have been tasked with a take-off for a simple R.C. structure, measure all concrete, formwork and reinforcement. The whole construction project will be in the use of a rule of measurement adopted in H.K. within which the work will be undertaken.

You will be tasked with providing the following considerations:

  • An explanation on the technique that you will use to produce quantities.
  • Why accuracy is important when using this technique.
  • Assemble a bills of quantities for a section of work from the measurements.

Assignment 1

1) The production of accurate quantities is essential in avoiding disputes and claims during the construction stage of a project. Produce a short synopsis that outlines the techniques that can be used, both digitally and manually, for the production of accurate quantities for the project. The critique should evaluate in critical terms the relationship between the technique and accuracy.

2) Normally construction projects’ quantities are produced to an agreed format. This format is termed a ‘Rule of Measurement’ and in H. K. this is produced by The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors. Local rules of measurement being existed that must be honoured in the territory where the project is going to be built.

Produce an explanation of how the use of a rule of measurement supports the production of accurate quantities.

3) With reference to the Hong Kong Standard Method of Measurement of Building Works (Fourth Edition Revised 2018), take off the quantities for all concrete, formwork and reinforcement of the whole structure shown on Drawing No. SE/05.

The following design information are provided:

Concrete Works

  • Foundation works is excluded in this exercise.
  • All R.C. elements constructed with concrete Grade A 35D/20
  • 50 mm blinding concrete under column base to be Grade H 10/20
  • R.C. curb 200 x 300 mm high provided at the edges of roof slab
  • Standard of reinforcement to be complied with BS 4449

4) Based on those quantities measured above you are also required to finish the abstracting and billing processes, using the industry standard format to produce a bills of quantities. This should be word processed and, in the format, following the rules of measurement.

You could make any reasonable assumptions, if necessary, to complete the assignment.

Remarks

1) Reasonable assumption(s) may be made and should be indicated in the answer provided.

2) Illustrations, sketches, etc. would give credit where they are relevant and support the answer.
