Assignment Task

Introduction and purpose

Work Placement (also known as Vocational or Clinical Placement) is a critical component of your learning experience where you will be undertaking activities in the workplace that directly relate to specific unit/s of competency in your course. Your work-based learning will focus on linking your knowledge and skills with situations in the workplace. During Work Placement you will undertake tasks relevant to these unit/s of competency and you will also complete assessment activities that will be assessed by the TAFE Queensland Assessor.

The purpose of the Work Placement Student Logbook is to identify and record workplace tasks that directly relate to these unit/s of competency and record the number of hours you are required to undertake in relation to a specific unit of competency/qualification.

You are expected to demonstrate the task/skills listed under the relevant Unit of Competency during the work placement:

  • You will be assessed from commencement of your placement in terms of communication, teamwork and the ability to follow directions, take feedback and your professionalism.
  • Skills may be undertaken as an integrated activity e.g. safety may be observed in conjunction with manual handling.
  • You are responsible for notifying the Workplace Supervisor/Assessor of your readiness to have skills observed.
  • You will be informed prior to the observation when a combination of skills may be observed simultaneously.
  • You are encouraged to perform skills in a holistic manner, focusing on the overall goal to minimise the risk of developing a single task orientation.

Reflection

During your Work Placement, you may be required to keep a reflective journal. The following framework was adapted from one formulated by Gibbs (cited in Cronin and Rawlings-Anderson 2004).

It is recommended that you use this framework in your reflective journal. Remember that your reflective entries are not a diary of everything you have undertaken or experienced whilst on placement; reflection is ‘thinking about’ and/or ‘thinking back’ on your experience. Reflection is about exploration, questioning, learning and growing throughout your experiences in the workplace.

Some opportunities for reflection may include:

  • Your interaction and communication with others.
  • Your ability to work in a team.
  • Your role and relationship with others in the work setting.
  • Your problem solving skills.
  • Your ability to adapt to and use new technology.
  • A frustrating episode or event
